If you’ve seen the American TV series, The Wire, you’ll know that its plot lines hinge on audio surveillance techniques and spy equipment used to trap suspects. David Simon’s much-applauded TV show reached five series and during its run attracted critical acclaim with comments such as if Dickens were alive today, he'd be writing for The Wire. It's been dubbed the greatest show in TV history. Celebrated crime authors, such as Richard Price and George Pelecanos, use plots that hinge on audio surveillance and wire taps. And although the use of audio surveillance and spy equipment in detective shows is nothing new, it’s the subject matter The Wire tackles that makes it really stand out.

Audio Surveillance – The Surveillance Culture

Although the Baltimore detectives use sophisticated phone taps and audio surveillance techniques, the criminals who are targeted in the wire traps are all clued up on spy equipment. In series one of The Wire, the team are out to entrap drug gangs dominating the crime world. But the gangs are all highly aware of the audio surveillance and spy equipment, and go to great lengths to speak in code, use untapped phones and never say anything that could put them in the frame on the telephone. It says something about post 9/11 America and the surveillance culture that’s emerged across the West in recent years. Spy equipment and audio surveillance is increasingly used by police and security forces, often utilising anti-terrorist legislation.

The Wire is set in Baltimore, a city that in 2005 had a pervasive and murderous heroin problem. It is said to be one of the most dangerous cities in the western hemisphere. The use of spy equipment and audio surveillance in the TV show is a way to infiltrate the deep-rooted crime, and the show is based on Simon’s real life experience working as a reporter in the city, and later spending time with its homicide police. Baltimore is a city that has strong industrial, working class roots in its docks, which like the mining industry in the UK, ended up becoming redundant. In its place drugs and murder reigned. In 2005, the murder rate in London was 2.1%, in Baltimore it was 41.8%. Using audio surveillance and spy equipment was one way the homicide detectives had of accessing the criminal underworld.
