What is a bug detector?

A bug detector is a device that can help you to locate hidden listening devices. It works by detecting the radio signals that are transmitted from the devices at close quarters. The bug detector needs to be within a certain distance of the device to locate it, which is why you need to sweep the room carefully and accurately, targeting areas where bugs are most likely to be hidden. An effective bug detector will be able to find listening devices that work on a range of frequencies. Finding a good bug detector

  Cover wide bandwidth - a bug detector that's only looking for devices that transmit at a single frequency isn't going to be very useful to you. You need a system that will pick up varying signals at different frequencies. A clever covert listening operation will ensure that several devices are placed and that each transmits on a separate frequency, to minimise the risk of being discovered by a bug detector.
  Distinguish between signals - remember that listening devices will not be the only things in your room producing a radio signal. Your bug detector needs to be able to establish what is a device and what is an innocent piece of equipment such a a mobile phone or a wireless laptop connection.
