Spy Equipment - Catching the Cheats

Spy equipment isn't just in the realm of James Bond style fiction. It doesn't just belong to MI5 or the secret services and security sectors, spy equipment can be utilised in all walks of life. And a recent news story in the Telegraph newspaper highlights how spy equipment can be used to help combat school exam cheats. Under the headline, 'James Bond-style gadgets to root out GCSEs and A-levels cheats' the article goes on to explain how spy equipment can help catch and deter exam cheats.

Spy Equipment: Testing Times
The advancement in spy equipment and surveillance technology means it can be used relatively cheaply and with a high success rate. Examiners are using a variety of spy equipment gadgets including tagging papers with radio transmitters and microscopic identification. By using spy equipment in this way, the examiners can ensure the exam papers reached the right school. And examiners are planning to use spy equipment to secure the boxes that contain exam papers, with codes transmitted from mobile phones to safeguard papers from being tampered with or copied.

Schools Embrace Spy Equipment
Using hi-tech spy equipment has already been seen to have an impact on the number of serious cheating incidents. Not only does the spy equipment ensure more cheats get caught, the presence of the spy equipment deters more children from even attempting to cheat. It may seem a little extreme utilising spy equipment in schools, but in the summer of 2007, 4,250 students were caught cheating. Cheating methods included smuggling in mobile phones to text friends for answers or accessing the internet to Google the answers. Spy equipment helps ensure fewer pupils get away with such methods, and the Examination Officers' Association has called for surveillance equipment such as CCTV to be installed in test centres.

Surveillance and Spy Equipment Catches Cheats
As well as conventional cheating, spy equipment and technology can be used to root out more subtle forms of cheating; software can be used to check student answers against the internet to check for plagiarism. Already examination boards have had a successful trial that used radio frequency identification devices to scan and track exam papers - spy equipment and surveillance technology could spell the end for exam cheats.
