Bug Detectors for Your Operations

ARTICLE BEGINS
History is full of bugging episodes and stories - and there are many more bugging secrets that we'll probably never learn. No matter how much individual privacy is championed, there will always be agencies or individuals who decide that the risk of bugging an individual, a building or any other item is worthwhile. If you think you might be the victim of covert listening devices, a bug detector may help.

What is a bug detector?

A bug detector is a device that can help you to locate hidden listening devices. It works by detecting the radio signals that are transmitted from the devices at close quarters. The bug detector needs to be within a certain distance of the device to locate it, which is why you need to sweep the room carefully and accurately, targeting areas where bugs are most likely to be hidden. An effective bug detector will be able to find listening devices that work on a range of frequencies. Some listening devices can fool bug detectors - particularly if they are connected to their transmitter by wires rather than relying on a wireless signal, but a good bug detector will be invaluable when it comes to ensuring your room is clean.

Finding a good bug detector
There's no point investing in a bug detector or counter-surveillance system if it's not going to do a complete job for you. You need a device that can::

Locate weak signals - the sophisticated nature of the spy equipment market means that listening and recording devices are being refined constantly. Manufacturers try to make these devices work using the weakest possible signal, so that they can beat the bug detector. Look for a detector that specifically states it can locate weak signals from these hidden devices.

Cover wide bandwidth - a bug detector that's only looking for devices that transmit at a single frequency isn't going to be very useful to you. You need a system that will pick up varying signals at different frequencies. A clever covert listening operation will ensure that several devices are placed and that each transmits on a separate frequency, to minimise the risk of being discovered by a bug detector.

Distinguish between signals - remember that listening devices will not be the only things in your room producing a radio signal. Your bug detector needs to be able to establish what is a device and what is an innocent piece of equipment such a mobile phone or a wireless laptop connection.
